Have a good/great run 的意思是：to experience success，即“成功”，在写作中可以代替 succeed。比如，The industry of batteries and electric motors is probably going to have a good run for the next several years. 未来数十年，电动汽车行业可能会迎来飞速发展。

In sight 相当于"visible"or"close to being achieved or realized"，表示“在望；迫近”，某事物即将发生的一个状态。既可以指抽象事情，也可以指具体事物。文中 "the end is in sight" 指内燃机即将走向终结。

“HUMAN inventiveness…has still not found a mechanical process to replace horses as the propulsion for vehicles,” lamented Le Petit Journal, a French newspaper, in December 1893. Its answer was to organise the Paris-Rouen race for horseless carriages, held the following July. The 102 entrants included vehicles powered by steam, petrol, electricity, compressed air and hydraulics. Only 21 qualified for the 126km (78-mile) race, which attracted huge crowds . The clear winner was the internal combustion engine. Over the next century it would go on to power industry and change the world.

解析

文章首段讲述了内燃机登上世界舞台的前前后后：法国的一家报社认为，人类的发明创造也无法改变马作为车辆动力，于是于次年举办了一场非马车比赛，在这场比赛中，内燃机获得了明显优势，在接下来了一百年中，不仅为汽车提供动力，也为工厂提供动力，从而极大地改变了世界。

Propulsion 一词我们可能很少遇见，但它的动词形式想必大家都知道：propel，意思是：to push or move something somewhere，推动，所以，我们可以推测出它的名词形式 propulsion 的意思：a force that pushes something forward，推进；推动力，比如我们平时所说的“风/喷气推进力”，可以说： wind / jet propulsion，再比如火箭、潜艇上的动力系统：a propulsion system，最后给大家一个例句：Interest in jet propulsion was now growing at the Air Ministry. 航空部对喷气推进的兴趣正在增加。（注意这个例句的句式、结构和搭配）

Lament 一词有两个意思，文中是指： to express annoyance or disappointment about something you think is unsatisfactory or unfair，抱怨，相当于"complain about"。在使用时，我们可以说 lament the fact that, 后面接一个同位语从句；也可以说 lament the absence / lack / decline of，比如，Public lamented the lack of government interest in the issue. 公众抱怨政府不关心这个问题。

第二个意思，表示“哀悼”，通常说 lament the death of sb.，比如国外一出事故，事故中有中国人丧生，外交部就会说：我们对死难者表示哀悼，对死难者家属表示慰问。翻译过来，就可以用到 lament 这个词：We lament the death of victims and express our condolences to their next-of-kins.

Power 一词在本段出现了两次，第一次是 vehicles powered by steam...，蒸汽动力机车；第二次是 power industry，为工业提供电力。Power 作为动词，有“为...提供动力”的意思，表达“促进经济增长”就可以用到这个词：power economic growth，这是一个非常地道的表达。
