2011 Text 1

Selling Classical Music

Devoted concertgoers who reply that recordings are no substitute for live performance are missing the point. For the time, attention, and money of the art-loving public, classical instrumentalists must compete not only with opera houses, dance troupes, theater companies, and museums, but also with the recorded performances of the great classical musicians of the 20th century. There recordings are cheap, available everywhere, and very often much higher in artistic quality than today’s live performances; moreover, they can be “consumed” at a time and place of the listener’s choosing. The widespread availability of such recordings has thus brought about a crisis in the institution of the traditional classical concert.

One possible response is for classical performers to program attractive new music that is not yet available on record. Gilbert’s own interest in new music has been widely noted: Alex Ross, a classical-music critic, has described him as a man who is capable of turning the Philharmonic into “a markedly different, more vibrant organization.” But what will be the nature of that difference? Merely expanding the orchestra’s repertoire will not be enough. If Gilbert and the Philharmonic are to succeed, they must first change the relationship between America’s oldest orchestra and the new audience it hops to attract.

Devoted concertgoers (who reply that recordings are no substitute for live performance) are missing the point.

  • devoted [dɪˈvoʊtɪd] 为形容词,表示“热爱的,挚爱的,忠诚的” (zealous in devotion or affection),比如They are devoted each other.

  • 同源动词devote “致力于,奉献于(give entirely to a special person or other task) ,惯用搭配为 devote oneself to sth ,比如我全身心投入到工作中:I devote myself to work.

  • 短语 devote sth to sth还可指“把用于”,往往以被动形式出现:sth is devoted to sth被用于,比如《经济学人》曾这样论述共享无人驾驶汽车的好处:As car ownership declines, the enormous amount of space devoted to parking will be available for parks and housing instead.

  • concertgoer ['kɑnsərtˌɡoʊr]  XX+goer指“常去…”

  • miss the point  point指“问题的要点、重心”,miss the point就是指“搞错重点”。

  • A is no substitute for B A is no substitute for B 意思是A根本不是B的替代品,言外之意是B是不可取代的,A根本比不上B比如《经济学人》曾发文表示苹果很难创造出足以媲美iPhone的产品Apple’s much-trailed announcement in March of new video-streaming, payments and other services shows it is trying. They may prove a hit, but would be no substitute for the iPhone. Technology is no substute for a real teacher.

There is no substitute for A.表示“没有什么可以替代A"。比如There is no substitute for hard work. Despite technologial advances in terms of the online classroom and platforms, there is no substitute for the learning experience that students receive in the physical classroom environment.

A is a poor substitute for B字面义是“A是B一个糟糕的替代品”,意思是“A不如B”,比如“电子商务不如实体店”,这句话用英文可以说:E-commerce is a poor substitute for real shops.

  • moreover表示“递进”,我们在考研英语真题精读:报刊艺术评论的衰落|2010 Text 1讲过一系列表示“递进”的逻辑连接词:moreover, furthermore, what is more, additionally, besides, in addition带大家复习一下。

  • compete with sb指“与竞争”,近义表达还有vie with sb, contend with sb for sth 与某人争夺某物。

  • troupe [truːp] 指“剧团, 艺术团体”(organization of performers and associated personnel) ,比a dance troupe舞蹈团。

  • bring about sth 义为“导致,引起”(to bring something about means to cause it to happen)  The economic reform brought about great change in the lives of the common people.

The widespread availability of sth has brought about sth. The widespread availability of 4G has brought about the fast development of the live-streaming industry.

institution也可指“制度,体制” (a custom that for a long time has been an important feature of some group or society) 比如the institution of marriage 婚姻制度

  • be on record 在这里指“录制的” attractive new music that is not yet available on record意思是“还没有被录制的、吸引人的新音乐作品”。

  • be widely noted 我们都知道note有注意的意思,noted 被人注意的,即“著名的,知名的”,be widely noted 众所周知的,广为人知的,可与我们熟悉的be widely known替换。

  • be capable of doing sth指“有能力做某事”(having the qualities or ability needed to do something),可替换 be able to do sthbe competent to do sth。

  • markedly常与different搭配,be markedly different from sth 表示“与…

  • 关于marked还有一个高频词组be in marked contrast to sth指“与… Their attitudes towards love and marriage stand in marked contrast to those of their parents.

  • vibrant ['vaɪbrən] 做形容词指“生机勃勃的,充满活力的”(full of life and energy)

  • merely ['mɪrl]义为“只不过,仅仅”(nothing more)。 Merely doing sth is not enough.

  • hop [hɑːp ] 本义是“跳跃,跳上跳下”(jump lightly) ,文中“it hops to attract”引申为“努力去吸引”。

(The End)
