它的同义替换有很多，补充几个外刊和考试中比较常见的：

1） crack down on

The government is cracking down on tax evasion among celebrities.

政府正在打击明星逃税行为。

2） root out

They are determined to root out deep-seated nepotism.

他们决心连根铲除根深蒂固的裙带关系。

3） wipe out

Climate change threatens to wipe out entire island nations.

气候变化可能会彻底摧毁整个岛国。

4） eliminate

New technologies are being used to eliminate cheating in exams.

新技术正在被用来杜绝考试作弊。

5） eradicate

Public health campaigns aim to eradicate vaccine misinformation.

公共健康运动旨在根除疫苗虚假信息。

China’s appetite for booze is prodigious. In the early 2010s, party officials and businessmen cemented deals over baijiu-fuelled banquets; middle-class urbanites gave each other fancy foreign wines; revellers bought giant pyramids of beer bottles at karaoke bars.

中国对酒的需求惊人。2010年代初，官员和商人常在白酒宴上拍板达成交易；中产城市居民互赠昂贵洋酒；狂欢者则在KTV里堆起啤酒瓶金字塔。

appetite 原意是“食欲、胃口”，常引申为“对某事的强烈欲望、渴求”，用法为 appetite for sth ，写作中可以替换 demand 。文中appetite for booze 就是“对酒精饮品的需求”。再看两个例句：

Young people today have an increasing appetite for emotional experiences.
当代年轻人对情绪体验的需求在不断上升。

Governments must curb our appetite for fossil fuels.
