There are plenty of movies to root for at the Oscars on Sunday. But this year, I care less about who wins Best Picture or Best Director than about the state of the Academy Awards themselves. Oscar voters need to win back the moviegoing audience’s trust without compromising their taste-making credentials. It won’t be easy, but for the sake of the industry’s survival, the Academy needs to try.

周日的奥斯卡颁奖典礼上有很多值得支持的电影。但今年，我更关心的不是谁获得了最佳影片奖或最佳导演奖，而是奥斯卡奖本身的状况。奥斯卡的投票者需要在不影响自己品味的前提下，赢回观众的信任。这并不容易，但为了电影业的生存，奥斯卡奖需要尝试一下。

It’s no secret that the actual ceremony has been on a troubling trajectory. The ratings for the Academy Awards broadcast have plunged 70 percent in the past five years. A series of high-profile flubs have undermined the glittering facade the Oscars are meant to present. And worst of all, the voters for these awards keep making decisions that seem to undermine their reputations as arbiters of taste. To a certain extent, that’s not the voters’ fault. The ratings have declined roughly in tandem with the average box office haul of the Best Picture nominees, as entertainment journalist Richard Rushfield noted in his newsletter, The Ankler, last week.
