极地冰雪不但禁锢着危险,也保存了两极地区的古代动物遗迹和人类历史。5000年前去世的冰人奥茨的尸体就很好地保存在阿尔卑斯山中。冰使得他的尸体不致腐烂,这样人类才得以窥探他曾经生活的轨迹。另外,北极可能还有其他的水獭或尚未被发现的猛犸象的DNA。
冰川的融化会加重这些宝藏暂时脱离冰层,甚至是被摧毁的风险
。这对人类了解地球历史而言,将是巨大的损失。
