As Beijing has expanded and real estate prices have soared, up to 5 percent of the workforce now live more than 25 km away from their place of work, meaning they have to commute over 50 km every day.

In addition, an increasing number of people are choosing to live in satellite towns outside of Beijing, such as Yanjiao and Langfang in Hebei province. They spend more time on the road than any of the capital's commuters, traveling more than 80 km a day, according to the report.
