Gormley's academic foundation was laid at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied art history, archaeology, and anthropology. His travels through India and Sri Lanka, where he studied Buddhism, had a profound influence on his artistic philosophy. Upon returning to London, he furthered his education at Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths College, and the Slade School of Fine Art, setting the stage for his career in sculpture.

Gormley's work is deeply influenced by his studies in archaeology, anthropology, art history, and Buddhist meditation. His sculptures, whether lead figures cast from his body or monumental inhabitable works, reflect his belief in the delicate interplay between the spiritual and physical selves. His art challenges the viewer by presenting an opening of power through the suspension of moral and spatial coordinates, which he refers to as "the darkness of the body," signifying the vast potentiality in the apprehension of the body’s constitution of space.
