海洋测量船“鲍迪奇”号，就更是老油条了。
“鲍迪奇”号（Bowditch）以美国著名航海家、数学家和天文学家鲍迪奇命名，属于“探路者”级（Pathfinder-class）海洋地理勘测船，是美国海军5艘海洋地理勘测船之一，也是美国海军在南中国海“执行特别任务”（Special Mission Ship）的29艘舰船之一。
美国国防部说“鲍迪奇”号放下的潜航器是用来监测水的盐度和温度以绘制水文地图的，这只是一部分事实。
除了水温和盐度探测器外，“鲍迪奇”号还配备了先进的拖拽式声呐系统(towed sonar)，用来搜集海底信息，搜集到的情报可以供给美军潜艇。
“鲍迪奇”号一直被认为是一艘间谍船或者叫侦察船(surveillance ship)，在亚太数国，包括美国盟友处，都留下了不光彩的冲突记录。
所以，美方官员承认“鲍迪奇”号和斯洛克姆无人潜航器都属于美国海军，但说当时“由平民操作”（The gliders are piloted by civilian employees）。

不过，国防部在事后清楚地做出了回应，并称中国将以适当方式向美移交潜航器，算是很客气的了……
国防部新闻发言人杨宇军称：
12月15日下午，中国海军一艘救生船在南海有关海域发现一具不明装置。为防止该装置对过往船舶的航行安全和人员安全产生危害，中方救生船采取专业和负责任的态度，对该装置进行了识别查证。
On the afternoon of December 15, a Chinese naval lifeboat located an unidentified device in the waters of the South China Sea. In order to prevent the device from causing harm to the safety of navigation and personnel of passing vessels, the Chinese naval lifeboat verified and examined the device in a professional and responsible manner.
经核查，该装置为美方无人潜航器。中方决定通过适当方式移交美方，中方与美方一直就此保持沟通。在此过程中，美方单方面公开炒作是不恰当的，不利于问题的顺利解决。我们对此表示遗憾。
Upon examination, the device was identified as an underwater drone of the United States. The Chinese side has decided to hand over it to the U.S. in an appropriate manner. Both sides have been maintaining communication on the issue. The U.S. side's unilateral move to dramatize the issue in the process is inappropriate, and not conductive to its settlement. We regret that.
有趣的是，特朗普团队竟然把中方将潜航器移交美方的决定归功于特朗普。
特朗普沟通团队负责人Jason Miller在推特上转发相关新闻，兴高采烈说："Trump gets it done."（“特朗普把事情搞定了！”）
但实际上，根本就没特朗普什么事，五角大楼发言人Peter Cook也说，这是中国政府和美国政府之间的沟通：
"Through direct engagement with
Chinese authorities, we have secured an understanding that the Chinese will return the UUV [unmanned underwater vehicle] to the United States."
通过直接与中国政府直接沟通，我们达成一致意见，中方将把无人潜航器移交美国。
这边五角大楼才说完，本来事情能“和平礼貌地”解决了，谁知特朗普立刻又发推说，“潜航器我们不要了，中国留着吧”：
这是小孩子怄气吗，这让五角大楼很没面子啊……
